HMS Dauntless D33 arriving at Cammel Lairds for upgrade work

The Royal Navies type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless has arrived at Cammel Lairds to undergo a propulsion upgrade program! She was assisted by tugs from Svitzer and Baluda Towage

The work will include the removal of 2 existing generators and replacing them with 3 new more powerful units....read more about it here...

HMS Prince of Wales R09 leaves Liverpool 6th March 2020

The Royal Navies latest aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales left Liverpool on Friday after spending a week on the Pierhead!, Weather was 100% better than when she arrived ;-) there was a huge turnout of people along the prom for her leaving and a UK F35B did 2 flypasts!!!

Helicopter "ops" on HMS Prince of Wales R09 today at Liverpool

The helicopters that were embarked on the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales left the vessel today. I missed the Lynx wildcat and the 2 Merlins but managed to "catch" the Chinook!!

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady inaugral call at Liverpool 25th February 2020

Virgin Voyages brand new vessel Scarlet Lady made her one and only call at Liverpool today , the 110.000GT vessel, built by Fincantieri in Italy was launched in February this year and is the 1st in class.

She will sail from Liverpool on the 26th February for Miami, Florida where she will operate "adult" only cruises to the Carribean.

Recent Royal Fleet Auxilliary movements on the River Mersey (the Birkenhead navy)

A little catch up with the "Birkenhead Navy" (Royal fleet auxilliary) over the last few months

RFA Fort Rosalie Was moved from Cammel Lairds wet basin and back into West float dock, Birkenhead while undergoing her service/refit, Turned out it was to make room for RFA Tidespring which arrived a few days later to undergo work/service under the newly signed FISS contract (fleet in service support)

RFA Wave Knight also left Cammel Lairds after her refit/service and went back into service after some "minor" propulsion issues

RRS Sir David Attenborough "boaty macboatface" launched on the River Mersey

British Polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough was launched from the Cammel Lairds yard on the River Mersey today 14th July 2018.

the vessel is also known as "Boaty Mcboatface" after the naming was put to a public vote!! One of the submersables that will be used by the ship will carry the Boaty name!!

She is the largest commercial vessel launch in the UK for over 30 years, with a tonnage of 15000 tons (when complete), she has now been berthed in the wetbasin for the fitting of topside sections and fitting out.

Scientific cargo volume of approximately 900m³
Endurance – up to 60 days (Polar Regions)
Range 19,000nm at 13 knots (24 km/h) cruising speed; more than enough for a return trip from England to Rothera Research Station, or to circle the entire Antarctic continent twice!
Ice breaking capability – up to 1m thick at 3 knots (5.6 km/h)
Bow and stern thrusters for excellent dynamic positioning in challenging conditions
Launch and recovery of aerial and ocean robotic systems
Crew approx. 30
Accommodation for up to 60 scientists and support staff
