Coaster "MV Swanland" sinks off North Wales

A regular visitor to Merseyside, the coaster Swanland has sunk off the north Wales coast at 02.00hrs last night, only one crew member out of 6 has been confirmed as rescued..

Having loaded her cargo of limestone at the Raynes jetty she was bound for Cowes when the crew reported a cracked hull and taking on water in the mayday.

Liverpool/Mersey ferries trip with the Nokia N8

A visit to Liverpool yesterday and a quick visit to the new museum of Liverpool at the Pierhead meant another chance to put the N8 to use. The lifeboat from New Brighton was out on the River Mersey and conducted a rescue excercise.

A little phone reviewing!! images anyway, Nokia N8

Finally got my hands on a Nokia N8 last week, its not been out of my hands since, the camera on this thing is without doubt the BEST fitted on any phone period!!!

12MP, large sensor, Carl Ziess optics (glass) F2.8, 28mm lens....the list goes on. Oh and HD video with an almost no loss 3X digital zoom.

Having used a good few mobiles over the years, from android to SE to IOS i have found that there are few stand out features nowadays, they all do pretty much the same thing, and NO i have no brand "snobbery" influencing my choices. For me the camera on the N8 is the stand out feature from a photography point of view. (this is a genuine replacememnt for my Fuji JZ300 compact)

All the images here are straight off the camera with no editing or cropping, i have experimented with the many camera options and as its new to me i still am trying new things out, but the images speak for themselves......

HMS Campbletown (F86) leaving Liverpool, 7th March 2011

The Royal Navy frigate HMS Campbletown (F86) left Liverpool for the last time today. She has been at the pierhead over the weekend.

She was built at the Cammel Laird yard on the River Mersey and payed tribute to her "builder" with a gun salute before sailing out.

After a weekend farewell visit, Royal Navy destroyer HMS Manchester left Liverpool today. The university training vessel HMS Biter was also present and escorted her out. One of the Smit tugs gave a salute with his fire monitors.

Very cold today and not a lot of shipping. The tanker that arrived yesterday at Tranmere sailed out today. A sail training vessel went into Cammel Lairds. A bulker, the KHOLMSK arrived last night and is in West Float, Birkenhead. The tugs that brought her in were on their way out of Alfred when i arrived.

The detained vessel "Most Sky" is still in the West float, her cargo has now been removed and the crew have been flown home

RFA Gold Rover on the move (again)

The Royal Fleet Auxilliary tanker Gold Rover was on the move again this morning, a dead tow from Birkenhead and on into the Cammel lairds yard. This is one of several moves of the vessel over the last few months. She is in Lairds for a shedueled refit/service.

The Royal Navy type 23 frigate HMS Argyll is at Liverpool for 5 days. Currently berthed at the CLT (cruise liner terminal) at the Pierhead.

HMS Argyll is a Duke class frigate, she was commissioned in 1991, her current Captain is from West Kirby on the wirral. She will not be open to the public for the duration of her visit

A rare visitor this year, not the vessel but the Royal Navy. River class patrol vessel HMS Mersey arrived late last week for a few days stay on the CLT at the pierhead. I believe she was open to the public over the weekend. She left this morning, pics here are of her pulling off the CLT and heading out.

There are some people out there who are convinced they can make a tidy profit off other peoples work and sell other peoples images to newspapers and agencies............ITS THEFT!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never been too bothered letting people who visit my blog have an image IF they ask 1st and its not sold on, happens a few times a week. If anyone reading this has a blog or a website with images of a "naval" nature on them, have a browse to check they have not appeared elsewere without your permission as there are people out there who think its acceptable to use others pics for profit and credit.

The ex warships display vessel HMS Bronnington has been moved from Vittoria dock to the West float, Birkenhead. I have no idea as to why the move took place but as you can see she is in a very sorry state. I think its only a matter of time before she is scrapped, which would be a real shame. During her career she had none other the Prince Charles as her skipper.

Daniel Adamson steam tug open day 11th Sept 2010

The Daniel Adamson preservation society held an open day yesterday in Liverpool docks. The Daniel Adamson is a Steam tug that was built in 1903. Despite the crap weather there was a big turnout, 2 1950`s buses were running tours of the Liverpool docks, the Daniel Adamson military band was playing and Paul Atterbury from the Antiques roadshow was there and gave a short speech.

The plan is to use the tug to run tours on the mersey when the work on her is finished, its all done by volunteers.

A busy morning on the river today, 2 chem tankers out of Alfred lock and some "traffic" out on the Mersey.

Cumbrian Fisher left Birkenhead along with Manas. Out on the river there was an inbound Arklow Flame, Tena and Christina all bound for Eastham and the MSC

On her usual Ireland run off 12 Quays was the Lagan Seaways (ex Lagan Viking) now sporting a new colour scheme and DFDS branding as that company has bought out and took over the route

Well she arrived in the usual Mersey murk! To me she does not look as good as her sister the Queen Mary 2 but then again she is a liner after all and the QV is more of a cruise ship.

She is leaving tonight at 23.00hrs, there will be a short firework display around 15mins before she pulls off the pierhead.

Cunards Queen Victoria to visit Liverpool 26th July 2010

Cunards latest liner, the Queen Victoria is to visit Liverpool this coming Monday, 26th July.

She will be arriving around 08.30hrs and departing around 23.00hrs. Mersey ferries are running extra ferries throughout the day to view the ship, they are also running 2 ferries to go out to New Brighton to "meet and greet" the liner as she enters the River Mersey.

Hopefully the weather will be better than it has been for the past week or so but i not holding my breath.

A lot of traffic today on the high tide, including 2 more sailing vessels that are now in Canning dock at the Albert dock complex in Liverpool. There are some themed events there over the weekend.

A new tug is on the Mersey, Svitzer Maltby arrived this week and was set to work straight away, she is one of the most powerful tugs on the River with a bollard pull of 70 tons!!!

A few quick visits to the Mersey this week. Preasident into the West float. Merseyside Maritime museums tug "Brocklebank" was on her way for Canning dock. The tanker Norodny Bridge arrived today (13th) for Tranmere, quite a small vessel compared to the usual tankers but she still took 2 Svitzer tugs for berthing.

Yeoman Bontrup ship fire news

Not a lot to report today, the fire is out but the vessel remains on the berth at Glensanda on Lock Linnhe. The tug Svitzer Musselwick is still at the scene as is the Coast Guard tug Anglian Soveriegn, i think these 2 vessels were on hand to help fight the fire. There were a number of large explosions heard locally and it is thought that these were due to gas bottles exploding onboard. It was declared yesterday that there was no pollution from the fire and that the ships fuel tanks have remained intact. The emergency services have remained on scene and continue to damp down the ship.

Initial reports that the Yeoman Bontrup had sunk at her berth have been discounted, she is still afloat but extensively damaged, the huge salvage operation is probably now underway.

The large self discharging bulker Yeoman Bontrup has suffered a major fire onboard yesterday. Currently moored in Loch Linnhe. A large coastguard tug "Anglian Sovereign" is also on the scene and assisted in the fire fighting. No one was killed but there were some minor injuries. All the crew got off the vessel.

A bit of a catch up really, a selection of vessels on the River and in the docks at Birkenhead this week. The major movement of the week was the VLCC BW Lake. Others here include the survey tug Flat Holm carrying out some survey work in the West float, the Scottish tug Voe Chief arrived in the East Float. Armac Marine services MV Martin is seen here passing New Brighton on her way to Runcorn.

Another VLCC (very large crude carrier) arrived on the Mersey for Tranmere today. The BW Lake. She did not stay long, sailing out on the following day. Tanker this size are never fully loaded and more often they only drop off loads of under 100.000 tons having already unloaded in Europe.

Royal Navy patrol boat HMS Trumpeter in Liverpool

The RN P2000 class patrol vessel HMS Trumpeter has turned up in the Albert docks! Her AIS data was originally saying "coalition warship" but is now showing her correct name. Liverpool already has 2 vessels of the same class, HMS Biter and HMS Charger, they operate out of the Albert dock marina as part of Liverpool and Manchester universities training program for undergraduates

Mersey Ferries Summer Cruise

Mersey Ferries ran a special "Summer Cruise" on Sunday 20th June in aid of the Clatterbridge hospital cancer charity. It was a great few hours on the ferry, which went out as far as the Crosby Bouy!! Some of the vessels seen were Arrow (on her way out on a new charter) Manannan (on way to IOM slowly as the Wallasey yacht club regatta was on in the River). The tanker Overseas Acadia was on Tranmere. Had a great display from the New Brighton lifeboat that was covering the regatta.
